bullet  General Notes:

A second check of the parish registers suggested that the baptism was 23 Jul 1789 or 23 Aug 1789 at Burrington. In fact, although the previous entry was in July, the date of this entry is clearly 23 November 1789. Now we know his date of birth then it must be November or later.

The baptism records for the three children in the Burrington parish records all show his address as "Town". From other entries this suggests that he lived within the centre of the village. Other entries show the hamlet, farm or other identifyable locations. But "Town" appears to be used for families who lived in the centre of the village. This might have been one of a pair of cottages owned by the church in Barton Road (now called Tyle Cott and The Croft). Those living at Town Bridge were stated correctly.

Burrington Parish records for marriages in 1819-20 - page 16 entry 46
William Blackmore of this parish and Ann Arnold of this parish were married in this church by Banns with consent of parents this thirtieth day of Dec'r in the year one thousand eight hundred and nineteen by me J Buckingham vicar. Both signed their own names. Witnesses were James Blackmore (father or brother) and John Kelly (he signed the other two entries on the same page).
- note that there is no reference to bachelor/spinster/widow, even though Ann was a widow. See entry for Ann for the evidence for this.

There is a chapel at Gammaton Moor and this is presumably where the school room would have been.
NDRO document B661-0 refers to Gammaton Methodist Sunday School, Weare Gifford - dates 1899-1946 so too late to refer to William

The Marriage certificate of son William and Ann Muxworthy shows the father of William (b 1827) was also William (a schoolmaster).

The Pestle and Mortar bequeathed to William Henry Blackmore by William Blackmore (b 1826) still exists and is with the Skyrme family. It is engraved "Wm Blackmore 1788". Presumably this originally belonged to this William. See his son for details. But, of course the year of birth is incorrect.

The Skyrme family also have the prayer book that belonged to his wife. There is a page in it that gives his birth as 3rd November 1789 in Burrington

As well as William being a schoolmaster, there is also a reference at Burrington, to another Blackmore (Thomas) being a schoolteacher. This is at the old Plymouth Brethren chapel - where a schoolroom was. William and Thomas were distant cousins.

There is also a house called "The Old School House" that is attached to the current school (now closed). It has some remains of a school floor, slate, from a school that appears to pre-date the current 1857 school. This is probably from the original Church House school where William taught(see below).

About Burrington School
From "Historical Notes on Devon Schools"
by Robert Bovett 1989
"A school for Boys and one for Girls is recorded in the Education Returns of 1833 and as no date for the commencement is given, it is to be assumed that they existed in 1818, the date of the previous return.
It is recorded in the Charity Commissioners' Report that the Church House was used partly for the school and partly for dwellings for poor persons and as the poor would have been removed to the Union Workhouse probably in the late 1830s, it is evident that the school was in the Church House before that time and probably from its commencement.
In December 1856, the Earl of Portsmouth granted to the Minister and Churchwardens, free of cost, a site for a new school and in 1857, the old Church House was demolished and the materials used towards the building of the new school, the local farmers doing the hauling of the materials and other costs being met by voluntary contributions and a grant from the National Society. The accommodation consisted of a large schoolroom and a classroom, with residences attached for the Master and the Mistress.
This is the present school."
