Wife is widow on 1871 census. According to a family member he died in an accident when his wife was 42 whilst working as a mason building a railway bridge at Morecambe Bay.
From a journal put together by his son John, there is this reference
"My father who was Inspector of the Furness Railway unfortunately met with
a serious accident at Carnforth Junction, was conveyed to the Lancaster Infirmary
and there died. Due to the influence of friends my three brothers and I were
admitted to the Ripley Hospital as it was then designated, but not all at
the same time. My elder brother Willie and I went there in the year 1871.
Mr ?? Preston was the Principal at that time and as far as I remember Mr
Appleford was one of his assistants but of this I am not sure."
