From the Ripley St Thomas Academy web site
1823 Thomas and Julia Ripley were married.
Having no children, Thomas and Julia were determined, as faithful Christians, to help fatherless children by establishing a 'Hospital' where they would be looked after and educated.
1852 Thomas Ripley died.
1856 Julia Ripley laid the Foundation Stone of Ripley Hospital.
1864 Ripley Hospital was officially opened, with 29 boys and 18 girls, from Lancaster and from Liverpool.
The Ripley Scholars were well looked after, and were educated so that they would find employment when were old enough. They regularly attended Chapel services in the Church of England tradition.
