From Peter's document : Legend has it that Job was the local 'station master' and met Hannah, the daughter of the local wool nabob as she travelled to school in Manchester, They eloped together.
This 'fairy story' contains many flaws. Hannah's father was in cotton, not wool and whilst his brother William may have been described as a local cotton nabob John Horsfall was his mill manager. Job was a porter and not station master, a position held by his brother James at the next station down the line. Lastly, if Hannah travelled to school it is odd that she could not sign her marriage certificate but 'made her mark',
What she was doing in Salford is not known. She was not there in 1861 nor is the name of the family living there at that time recognisable. She may have been sent to a relation to hide the fact that she was pregnant but this hardly seems likely in a period when most working class brides were pregnant at the time of marriage. In any event it would have hardly been apparent as her twin daughters were born just short of 8 months later.
She would have needed parental consent to marry so absconding to do so is not likely.
