bullet  General Notes:

Surname from name of stepchildren to Humphrey Potter in 1871

First name from baptism of son Edward

There are many mysteries surrounding Jemima Carter and children
- Edward Costin's marriage in 1851 states that he married Mary Anne Carter, but the birth of his son, Edward, gives his wife's name as Jemima formerly Carter. This is now resolved as he had initially married Mary Ann, sister of Jemima who died soon after the marriage
- Edward Costin's marriage in 1851 also states that Edward's father was George Costin (deceased) - George Costin didn't die until 1867!
- Edward died in 1858, yet Jemima continued to have children for another 10 years where she gave the name of the father as Edward Costin
- on one birth registration Jemima gave her name as Costin late Carter formerly Watson
- Jemima was the informant of Edward Costin's death
- Jemima was a widow in 1861
- The last few children gave the name of the father as Humphrey Costin who was actually Humphrey Potter.
- In 1871 she was using the name Potter, but had not remarried.
- In 1881 she is again shown as a widow, Jemima Potter
- Jemima Costin was the informant of the death of Humphrey Potter
- Jemima had a further child (Frances Maud Emily) after Humphrey died, but there was no birth registration
- Frances gave her father's name as Humphrey Abel Potter when she married (but that was Humphrey Potter's son!)
- All the children except Edward Costin (son of Edward and Jemima) and Julia (daughter of Jemima, but born 2 years after Edward's death) married with the surname Potter

Marriage at The Parish Church, Lee, Kent (part of Lewisham) on 11 Nov 1851
Edward Costin, bachelor, Labourer, this parish. Father George Costin deceased, Labourer
Mary Ann Carter, spinster, - , this parish. Father Edward Carter, Labourer deceased
The age column just had "both of full age" - Mary Ann was only 20 in reality!
Witnesses were Charles Walton and Isabella Jones
This was the first time that the name Mary Ann had been seen. It opened up more questions as the details didn't match Jemima in any way - until it was found that Edward was a widower when he married Jemima much later.
It now appears that Edward Costin married Mary Ann Carter and she died soon after. Edward then set up home with her sister Jemima Carter who was the mother of their son Edward. He married Jemima a few years later. Why was Mary Ann's father stated to be Edward? - it was James. Reason for saying that Mary Ann was the sister of Jemima was that Mary Ann's death was registered by Jane Carter (mother of Jemima)

Marriage certificate
July 13th 1856 at St James, Clerkenwell, Middlesex
Edwin Costin, 25 (or 28), Wid'r, Porter, 21 Swinton Street. Father William Costin, Postman
Jemima Carter, 21, Sp'n'r, - , -. Father James Carter, Hair Dresser
Witnesses Wm Webb, W H Burwash (???)
- This is obviously not conclusive as too many details differ from what appears to be known. However, with so many discrepancies throughout their lives anything is possible. It does seem to be Jemima, albeit the father's occupation is incorrect.
