London Girl's Overdose of Drug
Sister's Tragic Discovery
Ilfracombe Inquest Verdict
"Deceased killed herself by poisoning with an overdose of medinal tablets, but at the time the balance of her mind was disturbed," was the verdict returned at an inquest, held by the North Devon Coroner (Dr Ellis Pearson), at Ilfracombe on Friday, on Miss Jean Ashley Blackmore, aged 26, London Civil Servant, who ended her life by taking an overdose of medinal tablets while staying at her aunt's house, at 8, Belmont-avenue, Ilfracombe.
The Aunt, Miss Nellie Gertrude Blackmore, said her niece came to Ilfracombe from London on September 2 and had been very happy.
A sister of the dead girl told the Coroner of her sister's illness, and described what happened on Tuesday week, when the girl was found dead.
Thought Deceased Was Playing About
"I saw my sister lying on the bed. I thought at first she was playing about, and would not let me get into bed. I tried to turn her over on her side and speak to her, but she was unconscious. I called her name, but got no reply
"I then rushed for my aunt, who went for a doctor. I then saw a cup on the table which contained a little powder in the bottom, and a tablet box on her dressing-table was empty. I then realised that my sister had done something."
Dr C. B. Crabtree said death was due to the girl taking an overdose of medinal 5-grain tablets.
- the date of the inquest would have been Friday 27 October 1939 and the death on 24 (or possibly 17) October.
