Baptism at St Mary, Whitechapel - Page 54 15 June 1828, Humphry s of, Humphry - Ann, Potter, Mill Yd, Carman, born Dec 28 1823
There is another entry amongst several pages of handwritten entries on plain sheets that appear after the normal 1868 entries on preprinted forms. The entries all appear to be from about 1828, based on birth dates given, although ancestry.co.uk lists these as being 1868 (no year appears on these sheets of the register) June 15th 28 Decr 1823, Humphry, Humphry & Ann Potter, Mill Yard, Carman - date appears to be date of birth
Marriage - Jun 1850 Poplar Vol 2 P377 at Bow in St Mary Stratford, Bow church on 25 June 1850 Humphrey Potter, full age, Bachelor, Master Carman, Bow. Father Humphrey Potter, Deceased. Elizabeth Watts, full age, Widow, - , Bow. Father Thomas Abel, Deceased Witness James Harris and Sarah Nutter - don't appear to be family. -church copy has same information
Death - 3 weeks before his previous wife remarried (so they just separated and built new lives) Deaths Mar 1877 (5 Feb 1877) Potter Humphrey 52 Whitechapel 1c 262. Death on 5 February 1877 at 30 Wageners Buildings, Whitechapel Humphrey Potter, Male, 52, Carman. The informant was Jemima Costin present at the death, same address on 6 February 1877. (nb Note that the informant was called Costin, not Potter) Originally thought that this wasn't the correct person as I had presumed that he had died before his previous wife set up home with William Marshall. But noticing the similarity of dates of Humphrey's death and Elizabeth's 4th marriage, together with the same occupation as for his marriage, the fact that this Humphrey hadn't actually married and also the lack of any other entries that fitted in any way - leads me to be fairly sure that this is the death of the correct Humphrey Potter.
There are many mysteries surrounding Jemima Carter and children - Edward Costin's marriage in 1851 states that he married Mary Anne Carter, but the birth of his son, Edward, gives his wife's name as Jemima formerly Carter. - Edward Costin's marriage in 1851 also it states that Edward's father was George Costin (deceased) - George Costin died in 1867! - Edward died in 1858, yet Jemima continued to have children for another 10 years where she gave the name of the father as Edward Costin - on one birth registration she gave her name as Costin late Carter formerly Watson - Jemima was the informant of Edward Costin's death - Jemima was a widow in 1861 - The last few children gave the name of the father as Humphrey Costin who was actually Humphrey Potter. - In 1871 she was using the name Potter, but had not remarried. - In 1881 she is again shown a s a widow, Jemima Potter - Jemima Costin was the informant of the death of Humphrey Potter - Jemima had a further child after Humphrey died, but there was no birth registration - All the children except Edward Costin (son of Edward and Jemima) and Julia (son of Jemima, but born 2 years after Edward's death) married with the surname Potter
A further mystery is that the Potter's had an address of 30 Gowers Walk, but later children of Humphrey quoted an address of 30 Wageners Buildings (which is in Gowers Walk).

1861 RG9/272 There are missing pages towards the end, and these cover Wageners Building! Not found on the index on findmypast.com either (which also ends at the same point). The description of ED7 gives counts for page numbers up to 36. The last entry available contains the Costin family i.e. Humphrey Potter's new family

Is this Humphrey? - YES!!!! I have been in touch with the descendant (of son Humphrey Abell) who has the original "scroll" - also confirmed from the application form below Admission to Freedom of City of London in 1848 Tuesday 5th day of December 1848, in the 12th year of the reign of Victoria This day Mr Chamberlain having presented unto this court Humphrey Potter to be made of this city It is ordered that the said Humphrey Potter be admitted into the freedom of this City by Redemption in the Company of Loriners paying unto Mr Chamberlain for this City's use the sum of Forty shillings and eight pence. NB if this order is not executed in three months it will be void Admitted and sworn to the freedom of above named Company by redemption Ringed is the word "Carrier". - does Carrier equate to Carman?? The Worshipful Company of Loriners (from Wikipedia) The Worshipful Company of Loriners is one of the ancient Livery Companies of the City of London . The organisation was originally a trade association for makers of metal parts for bridles , harnesses , spurs and other horse apparel; hence the company's name, which comes from the Latin word lorum through the French word lormier.
Application to become a Freeman 30th day of Nov 1848 I, Humphrey Potter, (son of Humphrey Potter, late of Glasshouse St, St Mary Whitechapel Carman) occupying premises 19 Dukes Place Aldgate in the City of London and carrying on the business of a Carrier do hereby apply to be admitted to the Freedom of the City of London, by redemption, in pusuance of the resolution of the Court of Common Council of the 17th and 19th March, and 1st October 1835 in the Company of Loriners of London and I hereby declare that I am not an alien, nor the son of an alien, and that I am above the age of 21 years. signed H Potter witness Jno Sewell
The scroll given by the Corporation of the City of London is dated 7th December 1848 - presumably when he had paid the "Redemption" fee.
