Francis Arthur CRAGO (1879 - 1951) came from a pioneering family who started in flour-milling in Yass, New South Wales. Petherick CRAGO (1833 - 1907) with his new wife Ann STEPHENS (1838 - 1919) emigrated from Cornwall, England, and arrived in Yass about 1858. He was familiar with flour milling, as he had helped operated a windmill on the farm in Cornwall, and began managing Barber's Flour Mill in Yass. Soon three younger brothers joined him, and by 1869 the business was known as P. T. Crago & Sons, and in 1872 as Crago Bros.. A new mill was built in 1882, and prospered until in the 1920s the surrounding area had become popular for fine wool, and the wheat supply dwindled. Various members of the family established other mills in Brarixton, and in Bathurst. By 1902, Francis built his own mill on a rail siding there, which prospered, and he served a term as Lord Mayor of the city. In 1896, he moved to Sydney and built another mill on a rail siding at Newtown. This was burnt down in 1900, but re-built. Francis died in 1902, and the Newtown mill was then managed by his son Francis Arthur, always called Arthur.
