August 1908 edition of South West Gazette - the staff magazine of the London & South Western Railway. The magazine is held at The National Archive, Kew "We very Much regret to announce that Mr. G.M.Cowd, who was for sixteen years stationmaster at Colyton, passed peacefully away, on 11th ulto, after a long and painful illness He was much respected in the district, and leaves a widow and two children to mourn their loss. The funeral took place a Colyton Thursday I6th, ulto. The chief mourners were Mrs Cowd (widow), Master Harry Cowd (son), Miss Winnie Cowd (daughter), Mr and Mrs Hulme, Reading.(brother-in-law and sister-in-law) and Mrs Hulme (aunt). The coffin was of polished, oak with brass mountings and the inscription on the breastplate 'Gilbert Morris Cowd, died July 11th 1908, aged 56 years'. The first part of the service was held at the parish Church, Rev. G.R.F. Molinenux officiating, while the internment took place at the cemetery. The following railway staff acted as bearers: Phare, Godbeer, Thorne, Hoare, Richards, Sweetland (personal friends). Throughout the route the blinds were drawn. Amongst those present at the graveside were Rev. R.E. Rose, the following stationmasters, Brown (Seaton Junction), Taylor (Seaton), Godbeer (Colyford), Hobbs (Sidmouth Junction), Chamberlain (Littleharn), Falkner (relief, Exeter), Suter (late stationmaster Seaton), Hill (late goods clerk Crewkerne), Barnes (late driver, Seaton), Rendall (porter), Purse (pumps), G. Wary, Bull Goulden, Symonds, Pitcher, Smith (2), Tolman (Seaton), Hann (Honiton), Stuart and Richards. The fIoraI tributes were numerous and sent by the following: In affectionate rememberance of my dear husband, and our father, wife, Harry and Winnie. [There followed other names.] A very large artificial wreath, "With deepest sympathy from Seaton Branch Staff' The deceased was for many years prior to his death a member of the Wimbledon Lodge of Freemasons. The late Mr. Cowd entered the company's service as a junior clerk on May 1st, 1869, commencing duty at Farnborough. He subsequently served at Wandsworth, Richmond and Waterloo Stations. He was removed to Exmouth as chief clerk for family reasons, by the death of his father. He was promoted to Stationmaster, Colyton May, 1892, which position he held till his death. He was a very much respected in Colyton and the surrounding district, and great sympathy is felt for his widow and children in their bereavement."
