bullet  General Notes:

According to family info, it appears that Joseph Henry either married again, or lived with, a woman called Mrs Hockridge

Births Mar 1861 (likely)
Andrews Lucy Bideford 5b 532

Marriage #1 Jun 1879 Bideford 5b 907
ANDREWS Lucy
Hockridge John

Marriage #2
Marriage Mar 1927 Barnstaple 5b 713

Married at the Parish Church, Fremington on Feb 26th 1927
Joseph Henry Thorne, 67, Widower, Mason, Roberts Cottages Fremington. Father John Thorne, Labourer
Lucy Hockridge, 65, Widow, - , Combrew Fremington. Father John Andrew (deceased), Farmer
Both signed names but there is another name beneath Lucy's.
Witnesses were Joseph Henry Thorne and Mary Jane Gould.
The name of the first witness was clearly wrong as the only Joseph Henry Thorne around was the Groom himself!

The parish registers for Fremington show
Married at the Parish Church, Fremington on Feb 25th 1927
Joseph Henry Thorne, 67, Widower, Mason, Roberts Cottages Fremington. Father John Thorne, Labourer
Lucy Hockridge, 65, Widow, - , Combrew Fremington. Father John Andrew (deceased), Farmer
Both signed names.
Witnesses were William Henry Thorne and Mary Jane Gould.
Similar details except that the name of the first witness was in fact William Henry Thorne (his son) and the date was one day earlier - I have a copy of this entry.

She is almost certainly the lady shown in the 1935 photo that was taken outside 9 Penrose Almshouses, Litchdon Street, Barnstaple (see photo section)

She was said to be the widow of a butcher and had her own family

Death Dec 1937 Barnstaple 5b 512 Thorne Lucy 76

Burial at Holy Trinity, Barnstaple
21 October 1937 Lucy Thorne, 76, of 25 Sunny Bank

Probate Register 1937
Thorne Lucy of Sunny Bank Barnstaple Devonshire widow died 18 Oct 1937 at 25 Sunny Bank. Probate London 2 December to John Andrew retired farmer. Effects £139 13s 8d.
- John Andrew is described as Nephew of Lucy and living at Burnstone, Bickington Road, Barnstaple. (I suspect that this is Walter John, her great nephew, son of William who was the son of Lucy's brother Thomas)

Her will was made 30 Aug 1937. The executors were named as Frederick George Hockridge (son) and John Andrew (nephew). She asked that a headstone be purchased for the grave of her daughter Emily Hancock and the cost taken from the share of the estate that would go to her grandchildren Hilda Hancock and Winnie Hancock. She left £5 to her nephew John Thomas Hopper out of the share that was to go to her grandchildren William and Arthur Hockridge. (John Hopper not yet identified, but was living with them in 1901).
The residue was to be divided into 6 parts - one for her son Frederick George Hockridge, one for her son Frank Hockridge, one for her son Richard, one share equally between her grand children Hilda Hancock and Winnie Hancock (after paying for their mother's gravestone), one share equally to her grandsons William Hockridge and Arthur Hockridge (after paying the £5 to John Thomas Hopper) and the final share equally to the widow and children of her son Sidney Hockridge.
The will was witnessed by Ilbert Arthur Ford and Arthur James Hockridge, both of 26 Sunny Bank, Barnstaple
- Lucy had 6 known children and 5 are directly named. Hence it appears that William and Arthur Hockridge are the sons of her daughter Anny Hockridge.
