The Certificate has been obtained and this confirms he is the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Briggs) and the registered name was just John. The censuses and marriage certificate show his name as John S (for Sunderland) Earnshaw, suggesting he may have been the son of Betty (2nd wife), but this was not the case. This name was added at his baptism (after the person who brought him up?). The address at birth was Providence Place, Midgley. (this was next to Murgatroyd's Mill but now demolished)

All 5 children of Thomas were baptised at Luddenden St Mary on 17th March 1875. Probably because he had married the daughter of the Verger and had previously been non-conformist. Entry numbers 1647-1651 (on pages 206 and 207) in descending order of age
Christening entry says Maria's birth was 12 January 1864, birth certificate says February
Note that the second name Sunderland has been added - the maiden name of his stepmother

The will, dated 9 December 1940, left everything to his wife Lois. The will also stated that should Lois predecease him then all would go to his daughter Nellie Sunderland Preston. (This suggests that there were no other children)
