General Notes:
Information from marriage of daughter Elizabeth to Humphrey Potter - name given as Thomas ABEL - deceased. But on marriage certificate of Elizabeth to George Loader the name was William Abell (see notes for Elizabeth as the first names were probably transposed). "E Abell" was a witness. Likely to be mother, so Thomas probably already died. Different names were quoted for Elizabeth's father on each marriage -William Abell (to George Loader) -Thomas William Abel (to Anthony Watts) -Thomas Abel (to Humphrey Potter) -Thomas Abell (to William Marshall) It is likely that the "Thomas William" was correct, since have now found parents and siblings on 1841 census and the father is William. They are living in the same street as Humphrey Potter. Their first son (father William) was called Thomas William The father of Sophia and Joseph Abell at their baptisms was stated as William Abell The father of Elizabeth and Sarah Abell at their baptisms was stated as Thomas Abell The death of Thomas Abell in 1839 gave his father as Thomas and his address as Glasshouse Street - the same as the family of William Abell found on the 1841 census - The Thomas Abell buried at St Botolph, Aldgate in 1848 lived at Glasshouse Yard, East Smithfield. This is presumably the William Abell on the 1841 census
On FreeBMD, only possible deaths were Deaths Sep 1839 Abell Thomas Whitechapel 2 397 - no, this was an infant. But likely to be their son Deaths Dec 1841 ABEL Thomas Bermondsey 4 15 Deaths Dec 1842 Abell Thomas Bloomsbury 1 43 Deaths Mar 1847 Abell Thomas St Olave 4 438 Deaths Dec 1847 Abell Thomas Bethnal Gn 2 65 Deaths Sep 1848 ABELL Thomas Whitechapel 2 443 ** probable Deaths Jun 1850 ABEL Thomas Holborn 2 85 - 1848 death fits with remarriage of his wife in 1849

Searches on the IGI There is a baptism at St Mary, Whitechapel on 29 Dec1805 of Mary Ann Abell, daughter of Michael and Ann. Could this be his younger sister and that previous children were baptised elsewhere, before they moved to Whitechapel. There is also a Thomas Abel, son of Michael and Ann who was born 14 Feb 1811 and baptised 6 Mar 1811 at St Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey - where William got married. Also, there was a Michael Abel born 6 Feb 1803 and baptised 28 Feb 1803 at St Luke, Old Street, Finsbury - same parents Michael Abel married Ann Kinder at St Leonards, Shoreditch on 27 Sep 1801. Just possible! In case William/Thomas was born before the marriage, there were two baptisms at the Foundling Hospital C of E, St Pancras of Thomas Kinder - one on 2 Mar 1798 and the other on 2 Jun 1799. No parent was named. Records are at the London Metropolitan Archives
No Abel(l) baptisms at St Mary Whitechapel in 1799 or 1800. There was a marriage there on 18 Feb 1799 of Edward Abel and Sarah Porter
