Marriage Benjamin George Hooper Mar 1843 St Thomas 10 p404 - at Parish Church Topsham on 28 Jan 1843. Benjamin was "of full age", bachelor and a tailor. Father was Michael William Hooper, a cordwainer. Eliza was a "minor", spinster and father was William Row, a barber

Deaths Mar 1892
Hooper Benjamin George age 72 St. Thomas vol 5b p53. Died at Monmouth Street, Topsham. The informant was given as Jane Pew (niece), also living at Monmouth Street. - This was a newly re-written certificate. Actually the name was Jane ROW as on the 1891 census at Monmouth Street (wife of John Row born c1837)

One might be justified in thinking that the people of Topsham were so peaceful that the need for restraint did not exist, but we cannot believe that amongst the motley crowd which usually accompany ships from foreign ports there were no rowdy characters. Nevertheless there is no mention of anything to suggest the need for protection until 1819 when Michael Hooper, Constable, is mentioned. The office appears to be hereditary, for a few years later Benjamin Hooper was the Parish Constable.
