bullet  General Notes:

The big issue in reconciling the correct Michael is
Pro :
- Benjamin George said his father was a Cordwainer when he married in 1843
- Michael William said his father was a Shoemaker when he married in 1845
- Michael and then Benjamin became the parish Constable
- Children from 1813 onward had father Michael, occupation Cordwainer - except 2 where it was Constable - Michael William (1819) and Benjamin George
- Michael was a cordwainer when he married in 1807
- He was in Taunton asylum in 1841 and wife was Mary, plus son Samuel - as per churchwardens census of 1841. So that was the correct Michael. Is it just a coincidence he was in an asylum in 1851 and 1855?
- The national census that year lists him in the asylum, but much younger than true age. He was a ropemaker.
Against :
- 1851 in Exminster he was a Fisherman
- Death certificate (1855 Exminster) says he was a Fisherman (but probably the same source of info), but from Topsham
- Age at death was 64, not 71 as expected - matches with being 59 on the 1851 census

There does seem to be only one Michael in Topsham at the relevant times.
- There was another one who married Susanna Mugford in Topsham. But from the 1851 census, he was born in Plymouth and she was from Topsham.
- There is one in Exmouth who was a mariner. He was in Exmouth until 1861 (died in Dec 1861). Wife was Ann. He was born in Exmouth.

On balance it is likely that this is the correct person.
- The correct Michael in an asylum in 1841 and so likely to be the same person in Exminster asylum
- Age difference occurred from first asylum
- Occupation difference is only at Exminster - and may have carried over from the description "ropemaker" at Taunton
- If not him, then where did he go!

Name was obtained from baptism of son Benjamin

From Transcript of Topsham Baptisms
458 Michael Hooper, son of Michael & Mary 26 Dec 1784 B

Probable Deaths Dec 1855
Hooper Michael St Thomas 5b _1 (looks like 31 or 51 - on findmypast.com it looks probable it is 51)

Death certificate
Died on Twentieth November 1855 at County Asylum, Exminster
Michael Hooper, Male, 64, Formerly a Fisherman at Topsham.
Informant was John Bethrey, present at the death, of Exminster, on First December 1855

Also from the transcripts of the Topsham Registers
One might be justified in thinking that the people of Topsham were so peaceful that the need for restraint did not exist, but we cannot believe that amongst the motley crowd which usually accompany ships from foreign ports there were no rowdy characters. Nevertheless there is no mention of anything to suggest the need for protection until 1819 when Michael Hooper, Constable, is mentioned. The office appears to be hereditary, for a few years later Benjamin Hooper was the Parish Constable.
