POTTER, HUMPHREY ABELL mother ABELL
GRO Reference: 1852 J Quarter in SAINT GEORGE (IN THE EAST) Volume 01C Page 391

Born on 30 May 1852 at 2 George Yard, New Road, Saint Mary's sub district of Saint George in the East
Humphrey Abell, Boy, Humphrey Potter, Elizabeth Potter late Watts previously Loader formerly Abell, Carman. Informant was E Potter, mother of 2 George Yard, New Road, St George, Middx on 28 June 1852.

12 December 1852, Humphrey Abel, Humphrey & Elizabeth, Potter, 2 George Yard, Carman, born May 31 1852
- note the difference in date of birth from the birth certificate

There is an IGI entry, in the same batch as the entry below, giving Humphrey Abell Potter as the father of Frances Emily Maud Potter. However, she is found in 1881 (aged 3) living with Jemima Costin, who was Humphrey Abell Potter's stepmother. Frances is described as Jemima's daughter - so something is amiss!! - but this information corresponds with the marriage certificate of Frances Maud Emily Potter. He wasn't her mother, it was just that people referred to Humphrey Potter as Humphrey Abell/Alfred Potter.

There was no obvious sign of Humphrey Abell POTTER on any census. Unfortunately the 1861 census is unavailable at the likely point where the family would be. I have found Jemima Costin, her mother and two others. But there the file of images ends (but the household hasn't!) There is at least one more child of Jemima and then probably the Potter family would appear on the next page. PRO has confirmed that the remaining 6 pages do not exist now.

There is an Alfred Potter of the right age who married Rachel Peers and when one of their children was born his name was given as Humphrey Alfred Potter. It seemed almost certain that this is the correct person. Now I have the necessary evidence via the City of London scroll for Humphrey Potter handed down from Humphrey Alfred Potter to the current generation.

This entry had limited value, but was correct (I believe it was based on the marriage of Frances Maud Emily Potter who stated that she was 20, ie born 1878, and her father was Humphrey Abel Potter - in 1898)

There was NO marriage in 1877 - this must just be an assumption based on the birth year of Frances Maud Emily Potter and relying on the information on her marriage certificate.

THE REST OF THIS ENTRY RELATES TO THE PROBABILITY THAT HUMPHREY ALFRED POTTER IS ACTUALLY HUMPHREY ABELL POTTER.

It has now been demonstrated that this assumption is true.

- There is no registered birth of a Humphrey Alfred Potter in the 1850s.
- There is no marriage or death of Humphrey Abel Potter
- All other London Humphrey Potter entries appear to have been accounted for
- The father of Humphrey Alfred Potter was, according to marriage certificate, Humphrey Alfred Potter - a Carman. Although he says his father is deceased (he actually died 5 yrs later), this is quite a close match. As his father had "gone off" with Jemima Potter, then he might have thought his father had died.
- Frances Maud Emily named her father as Humphrey Abell Potter at marriage, and this person stated his father was Humphrey Alfred Potter. Is this close enough to suggest they are the same person?
- Humphrey Alfred was 84 when he died in 1937, exactly the right age for Humphrey Abel Potter
- There are no unconnected entries on the IGI
- in 1871 there is an Alfred Marshall (20) with Elizabeth, who was the mother of Humphrey Abell Potter

Using the logic of "where did Humphrey Abell Potter go", and "where did Humphrey Alfred Potter come from", leads to a high probability that they are one and the same person.
Now we know that Humphrey Alfred Potter's great grandson has a City of London scroll relating to Humphrey Potter, then all doubt has gone.
