bullet  General Notes:

From "The Ancestry of John Horsfall Lindley"

Reuben Lindley married Mary Goddard in November 1778. Mary was probably the daughter of Benjamin Goddard and Catherine Batty of Townend, Wooldale baptised January 1748/9 although there was another Mary Goddard baptised in May 1763 the daughter of William Goddard of Scholes. The youngest child of Reuben and Mary was baptised in August 1801 and assuming the child was baptised within a short time of birth would mean that Mary, daughter of Benjamin would have been 52 when the last child was born. On the other hand if Mary who married Reuben was the daughter of William she would only have been 15 at marriage again assuming her baptism within a short time of birth. I prefer the possibility that the Mary who married Reuben was the daughter of Benjamin particularly since there is a later marriage which fits in with Mary daughter of William.

William Goddard was probably the son of John Goddard of Scholes baptised in 1717 and died in 1777. Although his wife's name is not known William of Scholes had 6 children baptised between 1758 and 1776 so probably married late. His burial entry is of interest made during the period when there was a move to provide greater detail in the registers.

"William Goddard son of John, clothier of Scholes by Mary daughter of William Hall of Scholes aged 59 of consumption. William & Mary twins of John of Lane Head in Cartworth baptised 1717. Mary daughter of William Hall baptised 1683."

Benjamin Goddard was also the son of John of Scholes so he was William's brother. He was baptised in 1716 and married Catherine Batty in 1747. She was baptised in 1727 and was the daughter of John Batty (1695 - 1748) and Mary Tinker (1691 - 1775). John Batty was in turn the only son of the Rev. Gamaliel Batty (b 1669) and his wife Barbara (died 1742), Incumbent of Denby Chapel, Penistone 1691-1698 and later Curate and Schoolmaster at Flocton in the parish of Thornhill to the north of Kirkburton. The only other child of Gamaliel Batty, his daughter Barbara is buried by the Font in Kirkburton Church. The translation of the Latin inscription reads

"Barbara, only daughter of the Rev. Mr. Gamaliel Batty and of Barbara his faithful consort, is here interred. She was of pure manners, of an unblemished chastity, of a lively genius, of agreeable beauty, and a fine taste of good learning embellished all her talents and virtues. But they who eminently excel are generally short lived! The last day of the twentieth year of her age was not quite finished, when she resigned her breath on June 7th 1717. How rare an instance of early piety, was. alas in the flower of youth, thus snatched away!"

Mary was second cousin, once removed, of Lydia Batty(e) who married John Lindley (history ref 236)
