bullet  General Notes:

Frederick Abbey WIESENER (1877 - 1950) was a member of a family noted in Sydney as opticians and instrument makers. When he was in his fifties, some time in the 1920s, he obeyed an urge to change careers, went to Sydney University to study medicine, and qualified as a specialist ophthalmic surgeon, in which profession he practiced for some years. In the first half of 1938, he undertook on his own a trip through Africa 'from Cape to Cairo', a journey not many of us have attempted. The story of the journey has recently been incorporated into a book, under the title Australian Adventure in Africa 1938, published by his second daughter, Molly Gowing.

The Wiesener family grew up in a fine home in Jersey Road, Strathfield, only a short distance from Charles Hoskins' Illyria.
