In 1861, William (48) still a carpenter, living at Hill Cottage, Churchill, with wife Elizabeth (42), daughter Elizabeth (17, a house servant), Rachel (13) and Fanny (7). Also in the household is Mary Barrow (19, a schoolmistress - Elizabeth's sister) and Fanny Barrow, aged 6, a boarder. Ann is recorded in the census for Sidmouth, working as a domestic servant.

In 1871, the family is still in Churchill, William (59) a carpenter, wife Elizabeth (53) and Fanny (17). All the other children have left home, but Elizabeth's mother, Elizabeth Barrow, aged 81 and widowed, (born in Berrynarbour - formerly Elizabeth Reed) is in the household.

William's death is registered Barnstaple, Jul-Sep 1872, Vol. 5b p. 296.

Betsey Delve appears as Head on the 1881 census as a Licensed Victualler, living at Hill Cottage, East Down with her son-in-law John Rivett and her daughter, his wife, Ann.

In 1891. Betsey Delve is living at Churchill, head of the household, widowed, aged 72, a retired Beer House Keeper. With her is her son-in-law John (47) Gardener (he worked for Rosalie Chichester at Arlington Court just down the road), his wife Ann (51) and their children William (9) and Bessie (7), Also still living as a member of the family is Betsey's sister Mary Barrow, unmarried - a retired grocer (grocer's assistant).

The headstones of Betsey and her husband, William are in the graveyard of St John the Baptist church in East Down. William died 26 August, 1872, aged 61 (so born 1811) and Betsey on 30th March, 1894, aged 76 (so born 1818).

Fact: William Delve married Elizabeth Barrow, their marriage witnessed by John Delve and John Barrow - probably their respective brothers rather than fathers, but no way of telling).
