Deseret News 9 December 2003

Obituary: Violet Moore Smith Walker
"Grandma Vi"
Violet M. Walker, our loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away on December 7, 2003.
Vi was born September 23, 1914 to William Christopher Moore and Ellen Castle Moore. Her lively, close knit family included brothers Ted, Bill, and Les, and sister Nell, and Grandma Castle and Uncle Alf. Vi was always an avid reader, a quick learner and a natural leader. She got her start in business at 13, writing collection letters for her mother's Square Deal Grocery Store, and she graduated from West High at the age of 15.
Vi married Allen Calvert Smith, and they were blessed with two wonderful sons, Ronald Calvert Smith and Walter Allen Smith. When Vi returned to work, she enjoyed a 27-year career with Deseret Book Company, where she served as credit manager and director of personnel. Vi's greatest joy was her large extended family, including: grandchildren Lori, Kirk and Kyle Smith; Todd, Jeff and Chris Smith; Todd and Kelly Howell, and all their families. She was especially delighted by her youngest generation of great-grandchildren and her "great-greats". She was a member of the L.D.S. Church.
Vi is survived by a huge extended family of relatives and friends, including: her son Wally, daughters-in-law Mary Migliorelli, Marsha Howell Smith, and their families. She is also survived by her brother Lester (Cleone) Moore, many nieces and nephews, and a wide circle of dear friends from Deseret Book, Career Club, Highland Cove, and the Inn on Barton Creek. She was preceded in death by her son Ron and daughter-in-law Jerry Rainey Smith. Our family extends our heartfelt thanks to Vi's wonderful doctor, Edward Wyne, and the staff of Barton Creek and South Davis Hospice.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary at 3401 South Highland Drive in Salt Lake City. Friends may call at Wasatch Lawn on Tuesday evening, December 9 between 6-8 p.m., and on Wednesday, December 10 between 12:45-1:45 p.m. prior to services. Internment: Wasatch Lawn.
Flowers may be sent, or in lieu of flowers, we ask that you remember Vi with a donation to the University of Utah (for scholarships in Nursing and in Gerontology) or a gift to your
favorite charity.
