Took up recruitment post at Duke of Yorks School . Stated as born 28 August 1833 in the East Indies, not Scotland as per 1881 census and that he married Charlotte on 3 August 1876 and died in Devon in 1902.
The Duke of York's School referred to above was originally called the Royal Military Asylum (RMA) and then the Royal Military School. Founded in 1801 and opened in 1803 it was for the orphaned children of soldiers from the Napoleonic Wars. It's full name from 1892 was the Duke of York's Royal Military School. It relocated to Dover in 1909. As can be seen on the 1881 and 1891 censuses James was a member of staff there and it would be interesting to know if his children were allowed to attend, even though they were not orphans. There is a website that has extensive information on the school http://www.achart.ca/york/index.html . There is an admissions register CD available from the site also. Some of the admissions and discharge registers are at The National Archive in Kew under reference WO143 (WO143/22 covers the relevant period) Another interesting web site on the subject of the schol is that of the Old Boys' Association http://www.dyrmsoba.org/genealogy.shtml . The admissions registers from 1803 to 1880 are online at http://www.rma-searcher.co.uk/ - no reference to the surname Michie.
