Shoals of congratulatory messages and telegrams have been received by Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Walter, of Maidenford Farm, Goodleigh, near Barnstaple, who celebrated the diamond anniversary of their wedding on Monday. Two of the telegrams were from their Majesties the King and Queen, and from the Member of Parliament for the Barnstaple Division, Sir Basil E. Peto, Bart. The notable day was the occasion of a very happy family re-union at Maidenford Farm on Monday, most of the members of the family being present.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter were married at the Parish Church, Clovelly, on December 5th, 1872, by the Rev. John Henry Kinvan. Aged eighty, Mr. Walter was born at Philham, Hartland, and his wife, seventy-nine, was formerly Miss Catherine Andrew, of Burford, Clovelly. Mr. Walter farmed at Natcott, Hartland, for many years, and he has been at Maidenford for twenty-seven years. There are four sons (one of whom is in australia), and four daughters. Both Mr. and Mrs. Walter are widely known in the district, whilst they are universally esteemed.
The telegram from the King reads:- The King and Queen are much interested to hear you and Mrs. Walter are celebrating your diamond wedding day on Monday next. Their Majesties desire me to convey to you their sincere congratulations and good wishes, and trust that you will both spend a very happy anniversary." - (signed) F. H. Mitchell, Dec 3rd 1932.
The message from Sir Basil Peto is as follows:- "Please accept my very hearty congratulations to you and your husband on the occasion of your diamond wedding on Monday. I am very glad to hear you are in good health, and sincerely trust you may yet celebrate many anniversaries of your wedding. Yours sincerely, Basil E. Peto. December 2nd, 1932"
