James is not shown as the father on Thomas' birth certificate and married Betty some 6 months later. Whether he was actually the father or not may never be known but Thomas certainly took his name and passed it on to his own children. There is always a chance this can be established through Poor Law records. YoB originally shown as 1853 based on declared age at marriage but he was actually born in May 1854 and his "parents" did not marry until November of the same year. 1881 census indicates YoB as 1855 but this may have just been an attempt at respectability. At marriage (1872) occ given as Fishmonger, res Bradford. By the time of Will's birth (1879) he was a grocer living at 15 Wood St, Manningham. At Alice Annie's birth (1889) he was "Superintendent Prudential Assurance Company" living at 2 Cleveland Rd, Islington. By 1891 (Emily's wedding) he is just shown as an Insurance Agent. 1881 Census (LDS) shows family still living at 13 & 15 Wood St, Manningham, York - 13 having been the family home of Charles WHITTAKER (and Mary J). Only Thomas, wife Mary and 2 sons, Willen (Willey) and Challes (Charles?) appear and all are recorded as Agley with both Thomas and Willen having second initial W - for Waddington(?)
