***A sprig maker made sprigs or 'motifs' of Honiton lace which is a fine form of weaving using bobbins on a lace pillow . It takes about 10 hours to make a sprig measuring one square inch. It was a cottage industry and the sprigs would have been 'sold' to a lace manufacturer who would then employ others to make the sprigs into items like collars, cuffs, flounces etc. The manufacturer would have weighed the thread provided to the sprig makers and the lace would be weighed on completion, so there was no chance to make a little on the side. The workers were paid a pittance - often in tokens to be spent only in the manufacturers shop and the manufacturers made fortunes.
