General Notes:
One of these two births Births Sep 1852 Kippax Mary Ann Burnley 8e 187 Births Mar 1853 Kippax Mary Ann Burnley 8e 157 From source - John and Mary Ann got married at Hope Chapel, Nelson, in 1879. She was 26, and resident in Nelson. Her father was Joseph, a twister-in, deceased. Does that help to pin her origins down? (Born Nelson, circa 1853. Nelson used to be called Great Marsden.)

Mary Ann's is a rather tragic tale. She married John soon after his parents died, and took on John's young brother Alfred. She had a daughter Evelyn, born and died in 1886. Then John died in 1896. The following year, Alfred got married, then in 1901, as you say, Mary Ann has turned up in Walton Workhouse. I can only assume that Alfred couldn't take her on, as he was by then on his second wife (sister of the first!), his third child, and with a fourth on the way! Mary Ann is thought to have died in the Workhouse a few years later.
Mary married John BRAY, son of William BRAY and Sarah KIPPAX, circa Mar 1879 in Burnley, Lancashire, England. (John BRAY was born circa Jun 1849 in Holmfirth, Yorkshire, England and died circa Dec 1896 in Bootle, Lancashire, England.)
