bullet  General Notes:

Although told that the birth wasn't registered (see below), I searched under names Costin and Potter
FreeBMD (1876-1880) Nov 2008 and also on Findmypast in case there might be missing entries.
Costin : none other than Emily Alexander in Mar 1879
Potter : None

There is this birth
Births Sep 1878 Potter Frances Emily Chertsey 2a 47 (does not fit at all - wrong parents)
Only other birth is Births Mar 1882 Potter Frances Maud St. Olave 1d 218 (far too late - see 1881 census)
-see baptism info that shows birth was 1877

One complicating factor was a birth of a William Humphrey Costin in Jun 1878 - about the time that Frances Maud Emily was believed to have been born. But he was the son of Edward and Matilda Costin.

Baptism at St Mark's, Goodman's Field, Whitechapel
on Page 149, Entries 1185 & 1186
10 July 1881, Frances Maud Emily, Humphrey & Jemima, Potter, 30 Wagners Buildings Gowers Walk, Carman, born July 13th 1877
10 July 1881, Maud Elsie, Alfred & Julia Louisa Mary, Green, 30 Wagners Buildings Gowers Walk, Chest & Box Maker, born June 7th 1881
- Julia Louisa (actually Julia Laura) and Frances Maud were half sisters - mother Jemima

By now knowing the date of birth, there is this birth entry
Name: Florence Maud E Bailey Year of Registration: 1877 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep District: Whitechapel County: London, Middlesex Volume: 1c Page: 339
- this person is shown on the 1881 census as Florence M E Bailey, born Middx Minories

Marriages Jun 1898 Mile End 1c 719
Marriage on 10 April 1898 at Christ Church in the Parish of Stepney (Mile End district) by Banns
Arthur Hudson Davis, 20, Bachelor, French Polisher, 124 Oxford St. Father Charles Davis, Engineer
Frances Maud Emily Potter, 20, Spinster, Tailoress, 262 Oxford St. Father Humphrey Abel Potter, Licensed Carman
The witnesses were
William Costin Potter (brother) , Edith Davis (sister), Elizabeth Jane Potter (sister), Ernest Charles Davis (brother)
- William Costin Potter was registered at birth as William James Potter Costin
- It appears that Frances wrongly gave her father a middle name of Abel, confusing her father and half-brother - see baptism for clarification
- Oxford Street was later renamed Stepney Way

Deaths Sep 1964
Essex S.W. 5a 139 Davis Frances M E (age 87)

This member entry appears to have been based on the marriage entry in 1898 when she stated her age as 20 and father was Humphrey Abel Potter

From source:
"My husbands Grandmother was a Francis Maud Emily Potter born 1878 in Stepney/ Whitchapel she was not registered at birth because her parents did not want her to have any of the vacinations. her father was Humphrey Abel Potter born 1852 in London , I have not found out her Mothers single name because the info I found just said Mrs Humphrey Abel Potter so I do not know if this is a connection to you. I know Francis had a sister,
Francis married a Charles Hudson Davis and they lived in Leyton , London E.10

I have spoken to my Mother-in-law and she said they did not see her Grandfather so she does not know anything about him, she said that she had a photo of her Grandmother and will look it out. Her Mother had a sister called Julia Potter her Married name was Green , they lived in Balmoral Road Leyton at one time and she had a Daughter called May.
If she remembers more I will let you know.
"

The IGI entry, which is referred to in the note above, has been confirmed from the marriage certificate where Frances stated that her father was Humphrey Abel Potter. If this is correct, then it suggests that her father was her own half brother! This was quite possible since Frances doesn't appear to have been born until some time after Humphrey Potter (snr) died. Without a birth certificate it is almost impossible to prove any more, unless there is a baptism available somewhere (now found and this gives Humphrey as the father and the date of birth stated was just after Humphrey died).
