Western Morning News December 14th, 1907 A Crimean Veteran Mr William Row, whose photograph we reproduce below, resides at 12, Edith-Street, St. Budeaux. he was born at Topsham in the year 1830. and joined the Royal Navy as a shipwright on May 29th, 1853. His first ship was H.M.S. Queen, Capt. Mitchell, which was ordered to the East at the outbreak of the Crimean War. Mr. Row was present at the bombardment of Odessa, took part in the landing of troops at the battle of Alma and landed in the trenches on October 1st 1854. He fought at the battle of Balaclava, October 25th; the battle of Inkerman, November 5th; and was in the trenches at the siege of Sebastopol until its fall on September 8th, 1855. For these services he received the English and Turkish medals with bars for Inkerman and Sebastopol. His next ship was the Royal Albert, from August 1858, to January 1861, flagship of the Channel fleet, under Admiral Sir Charles Fremantle. He then joined the Nimble, tender to the Nile, flagship of Admiral Milne, on the West India Station, as carpenter's mate, and remained in her from 1861 to 1864, after which he was appointed to the Gladiator, Captain Short on particular service, 1864 to 1866. On promotion to chief carpenters mate he joined the Griffon gunboat, Captain Davidson, and proceeded to the West Coast of Africa, but had only been on that station a few months when Griffon went ashore in the Bight of Benin and became a total wreck. Fortunately no lives were lost, but excepting the clothes they wore at the time the crew lost everything. Mr. Row was next appointed to the Speedwell, gunboat, Captain Parry, in which he served from 1867 to 1871, and again proceeded to the West Coasr of Africa. He was absent from England for four years and four months, half of which time was spent on the South-East Coast of America. Returning to England, he joined the Indus, and afterwards the Implacable, training ship for boys, from which he was pensioned in June, 1875, receiving the medal for long service and good conduct, with the gratuity. Soon afterwards he rejoined, and served as a pensioner for four years, finally retiring from the service in 1879. Mr. Row will be remembered by many of the inhabitants of Ford, Devonport, where for many years he carried on the business of a grocer at 6, Kent-Road.
William married Elizabeth (ROW). (Elizabeth (ROW) was born circa 1828 in Sidbury, Devon, England.)
