Dear Jack
I had a look at various Denholme bits I have squirreled away on disc for future reference tonight and came across this.
Michael Foster, a son of Jonas and Mary Foster christened Haworth 18 Oct 1841 (C018512) appears to have been for a brief period the first salesman when the residents of Denholme decided they needed their own Coop, instead of being a branch of the Queensbury society:
"The first recorded meeting was held in the Foresters' Hall on September
1st 1880, when the following resolutions were passed;-
1. That we form a Co-operative Society, and that it be called the
"Denholme Industrial Co-operative Society Limited";
2. That Henry HOLDEN be President;
3. That Linneus HOYLE be Vice-President;
4. That Timothy HOLMES be Treasurer;
5. That the following persons form the Committee, viz.: Ishmael HEY,
Jonathan TIDSWELL, Leonard RUSBY, John BRADLEY, John FRENCH, Thomas
WHITAKER, William INGHAM and Daniel SUGDEN;
6. That John RUSBY be the Secretary;
7. That Michael FOSTER be engaged as salesman at the rate of 17s per
week for the first six months;
8. That we take the house situate in Chapel Street from Michael FOSTER
at a weekly rent of 3s."
"Before this meeting, however, the persons in favour of the formation of
the Society must have met and in a measure made some preparation, for
the first rented premises were the house No. 18 South Street and scales,
etc. were bought and taken there, but actual business was started in the
house No. 3 Chapel Street."
"..the first salesman did not remain long in the employment of the
Society, for, following a resolution "that the wage of our shopman be
advanced from 17s to 18s per week", the next resolution recorded at a
meeting held December 1st 1880 reads: "That John FRENCH be appointed
salesman (in place of Michael FOSTER) at the salary of 1 pound per week.”
And here are the gentlemen concerned in 1881. A case of being ditched for a younger model?
