From source "Just to let you know that when I went to see my Auntie Annie in Exmouth last week, she said that Peggy Eyres had passed away on 24/02/06 aged 86 years. Cremation will take place on 07/03/06 11.45. In the local paper it said Peggy Juanita wife of Reg, mother of Robert, Rowland and Christopher."
Extract from Exmouth Journal CHEERS TO POWDER MONKEY October 2000 Exmouth Journal Town's newest pub recalls lady who served alongside Nelson on the Battle of the Nile. Exmouth's newest public house - The Powder Monkey - was opened yesterday in a display of colour, with the standards of naval associations flying, a Marine in 16th Century uniform and a modern day naval rating. The J D Wetherspoon Harbour at Hayne House in The Strand was declared officially opened by 80-year-old Peggy Eyres, a great great niece of Nancy Perriam after whom the premises have been named. Members of Exmouth Branches of the Royal Navy Association, the Royal Marines and the White Ensign Association for a guard of honour as Peggy Eyres cut the opening ribbon alongside manager Pam Cowan. A large crowd watched, including other relatives of Nancy Perriam. She was an Exmouth seamstress who served as a powder monkey in the Royal Navy. She accompanied her husband on the warships Crescent and Orion at the captain's invitation. When battles broke out, she worked as the powder monkey, ferrying gunpowder and magazines below decks to the guns. She was present at the battle of L'Orient in 1795, the Battle of Cape St Vincent in 1797 and served alongside Nelson in the Battle of the Nile in 1798. Nancy Perriam was born in Exmouth in 1768 and after her husband was killed at sea, she returned to the town and lived in Tower Street where she died in 1865. She was buried in Littleham churchyard. Hayne House was the former offices of The Journal and its sister paper, the Exmouth Herald. The new public house, which has involved a £1.5 million refurbishment and rebuilding of the listed building, has created 22 full and part-time jobs. - more info at the Exmouth Museum
