bullet  General Notes:

Alexander Beale CAMPBELL

Beale is a grandson of the Rev. George Campbell, who had been a friend of the family for many years, and the second son of the Rev. Alex P. Campbell and "Maydo". Alex was himself a close friend of many family members, and presided at a number of their marriages and funerals; he gave the address at Charles Hoskins' funeral, and preached the sermon at the opening of Hoskins Memorial Church.

After education at North Sydney High, and Sydney University (where he played Rugby Football), Beale taught at Newington for a year; then pursued Accountancy studies, leading to qualifying A.C.A., and joining the firm of Allard, Way & Hardie. In 1938 he joined Flack & Flack, then one of Sydney's leading firms, later to become part of the world-wide firm of Price Waterhouse.

In 1942 he joined the A.I.F., and with the 2/6 Field Regt. was posted to Albury. Employed as Battery Surveyor, with rank of Bombardier, soon he saw 8 months active service in New Guinea, including jungle warfare. After home leave, a further 8 months followed in Borneo, with other postings in Port Moresby, Finschhafen, Samarinda, Samarai, Dobadura and Milne Bay. During this time, he used his talent for drawing (he was a member of the Royal Art Society pre-war) by recording many of his colleagues and places in sketches and water-colours. Many of these are still in the possession of the family.

Three days after discharge from the A.I.F., he married Helen, and returned to his career in Accountancy. In 1948-49, with Helen, he went overseas on exchange duty with Price Waterhouse in London and New York, being away 16 months. On return to Sydney, he was admitted to partnership in the firm in 1950. In 1968 he became a member of the Management Committee, and in 1969 was appointed as the first Partner-in-Charge of the Sydney office.

He was personally involved in Estate Planning, and Consultancy for pastoralists in all Australian States. Beale and Helen themselves acquired a development property in the "Ninety Mile Desert area of South Australia, and he was adviser to a number of other family members.

In his profession, he was a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, and Chairman of their Research Committee on Internal Control. He travelled extensively overseas representing the Australian firm. He was also a Commissioner of Australian Frontier. He retired from the firm in 1974. Sadly W health has not allowed him to fulfil their plans for the things they would have loved to do.

Beale was Chairman of the Presbyterian Foundation for some time and also a Trustee of the Lithgow Memorial Church.
