Betsy WILTON dau of John & Elizabeth, 04th. June, 1797
Before immigration, they seemed to live in Bude, Cornwall and it took 2-3 months to cross the ocean. Canadian relatives have said the group of Orchards, Wiltons, Jaspers, Beatty's, etc., landed at New York and traveled overland to Cleveland. Thomas died two weeks after arriving at Cleveland in 1840. That gives us an arrival date.
Elizabeth Beatty, formerly wife of Thomas Orchard, from Cornwall, England is on the gravestone. She traveled with the family as a widow "from Cleveland to Toronto, to Hamilton and north to Guelph. They had friends in Eramosa and the two older boys traveled north to claim two fifty acre lots at Arthur's land office that opened in 1840. They spent the first winter of 1841 back in Guelph. The whole family moved to the area in the spring of 1842. Mrs. Orchard took her farm at Div 1, lot 14, Con 1, Egremont. This is the property that USS # 3 was built on in 1903."
"A settler was required to build a cabin or log house and make certain noticeable improvements such as clearing land for a period of five years before receiving the patent or Crown Deed."
This information in quotes came by fax through the Irvine family in Canada. (source Ann Blocker)
Betsy married Thomas ORCHARD, son of Simon ORCHARD and Unknown, on 24 Apr 1815 in Marhamchurch, Cornwall, England. (Thomas ORCHARD was born on 29 May 1789 in Poundstock, Cornwall, England and died in 1840 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA.)
Betsy next married Isaac BEATTY. (Isaac BEATTY was born circa 1795 in Marhamchurch, Cornwall, England.)
