Children

George, Elizabeth and Edmund are definitely children of “my” John Thorne. Address was Back Lane, Barnstaple for birth of Elizabeth Ann

Results - It appears that the census entry for 1851 is correct as two of the children are now confirmed as having parents John and Mary (nee Evans), in addition to George and Joseph Henry. To confirm the 1881 and 1891 census are correct then we still need to identify Emma, but using the 1861 census it may well be that she was born in 1855/56, rather than 1852/53 as suggested on other censuses. Emma was baptised in Fremington 29 Dec 1858 at the same time as older brother George

That gives confirmed children of John and Mary as Elizabeth (1844), Edmund (1850), George (1852), as well as Joseph Henry. It is more than likely that William (c 1837-38) and John (c 1846-47) shown on 1851 census are also their children. The additional probable children are Emma (c 1852-53 or c 1855-56) and Thomas (c 1852-53).  No birth registration fund yet for Emma.

Result so far from the basic information provided

The original information was remarkably accurate. However, there were obvious omissions and there are a lot of questions remaining.

We know that :

-          Joseph Henry Thorne was the son of John Thorne and Mary (Evans)

-          John and Mary Thorne had at least 4 children – probably 6-8

-          Eliza Ann Blackmore’s mother was Ann Muxworthy

-          William Blackmore’s father was William Blackmore, a schoolteacher

-          Ann Muxworthy’s father was William Muxworthy

-          Joseph Henry Thorne had at least 6 children and not 4. The other two are William Henry and Florence M

-          William Blackmore had at least 8 children, not just Eliza Ann

Further questions

  1. William Blackmore (1826)

·         Where is William Blackmore in 1871 and 1881

·         When and where was the birth

·         Who was William Blackmore (father of William)

  1. Who was William Muxworthy (father of Ann)
  2. Who was John Thorne
  3. Who was Mary Evans
  4. Family of Joseph Henry Thorne
  5. Who was Richard ? at the marriage of Eliza Ann Blackmore’s marriage
  6. Who was Henry Molland at the marriage of William Blackmore and Ann Muxworthy
  7. What is the connection with Yarner Estate near Becka Falls (mum’s grandparents??? Not Best, and seemingly not Thorne)

Answers to some of the questions

1 Search for William Blackmore

On the 1881 Census, the only likely family found was William and Ann BACKMORE. But further checks made this a very unlikely family. It is after Ann died and the wife of this family was previously called BUTLER. The children span the time when Ann was alive. This family has been found on the 1891 census, called BLACKMORE (although William & Ann aren’t there). I have now also found this William on the 1851 and 1861 census, although in 1851 his place of birth is Burrington!! By finding both William’s in 1851, I can now categorically state that they are two different people – but closely related.

From the Memorial Inscription at Ilfracombe, I doubt that William married again. The reference is only to William, a daughter (Elizabeth Ellen) and his wife (Ann MUXWORTHY).

For 1881, searched in every known way but not found him anywhere. We now know that he spent many years overseas – see below. This may account also for his non appearance in 1871.

The 1851, 1891 and 1901 Census all list William as being born in Burrington with a consistent age (born 1826/7). Having finally found his baptism at Burrington in 1826, then this information is correct.

His parents were given at his baptism as William and Ann Blackmore. The father, William, was christened in Burrington on 23 Nov 1789 (son of James and Grace). William Blackmore married Ann Arnold in Burrington on 30 Dec 1819. There is a marriage of James Blackmoor to Grace Bendle on 30 Jun 1788. However, further research shows that her name was almost certainly Rendle. All references, bar one, found to William senior (baptisms and weddings of his children and the 1841 census) state that he was a schoolteacher. The exception is the 1851 census where his widow is described as “Ag Labs wife”.

There is a baptism of Grace Rendle (although could be confused for Bendle) on 25 Jan 1766, daughter of William and Grace. However, there is no other reference to this family with the name Bendle – they are certainly not buried with other Bendle’s in Burrington. There are burials in Burrington of both a William and Grace Rendle and there is a marriage in Atherington of William Rendle to Grace Cawsey. Until I can look again at the registers, my assumption is that Grace was Grace Rendle. A friend had a look and the marriage entry does look like Bendle, so it is currently assumed that the clerk made an error in transcribing the data to the register.

It was interesting to inspect the Burrington registers as it shows they were not created at the time of the event, but written up at the end of the year. Marriages, Baptisms and Burials all follow each other with not even a single line gap between them. It would not be able to predict with such accuracy the numbers of each event and so the document was obviously written from a “draft” document, or from other notes retained by the church. For 1729, the page is headed “Copy of the register for y year 1729”, further suggesting that there was a prime source document.

The microfiche copy of the registers for Burrington is extremely difficult to read and so it was not possible to determine earlier generations before James Blackmore. However, there are suggestions via the IGI that he was born in South Molton. Further research is required to ascertain this and previous generations.

I now have a copy of his will and the article in the local paper for his funeral

-          He was survived by seven children and one had died 21 years before. So there were only 8 children

-          There was no reference to a second wife

-          After building railways in UK, he spent several years in Peru, Uruguay and Ceylon building railways

-          He left his money to 6 of his children, his housekeeper and one of his grandchildren. Thomas received nothing as he owed his father money

-          Any money given to Eliza was to then pass to her children

-          Lucy Grace was married to Frederick Garnish

-          Florence Mary was married to someone called Boxall or Boxhall

-          He was a fluent speaker of Spanish

William had two siblings, John and Grace Baker. Little is yet known about John. Grace and her husband moved away from Devon, initially to London, then Bradford Abbas in Dorset, Much Wenlock in Shropshire and finally to Lower Holker, Flookburgh in Lancashire (now Cumbria). I wonder where her middle name, Baker, came from – I have yet to come across it as a family name anywhere.

William’s uncle James (born 1792) emigrated to the USA and settled in Michigan. Several of his family have been tracked on the US Censuses.

Williams aunt Grace married a Richard Blackmore. He does not so far appear to be related, although I have seen references to him being a cousin.

3 and 4 John Thorne and Mary Evans

Surprisingly, when we were looking for the name Thorn(e) in the Fremington parish registers we found John Thorne and Mary Evans married in 1856 – after at least 6 children were born! This is almost certainly the right couple as there isn’t another suitable John Thorne or Mary Evans in the area. So it seems that Joseph Henry was their only legitimate child.

John, Ann and Eliza Thorne were variously witnesses at the marriages of Eliza Thorne/James Horwill and Grace Thorne / James Vanstone and these are worth following up.

Marriage Dec 1871 - Barnstaple vol 5b P857 of Emma Thorne and William Eastbrooks gives the father as John Thorne, labourer. The marriage took place on 21 Oct 1871 at the Parish Church in Fremington – all of which appears to fit

Births Jun 1852 THORNE Emma Barnstaple  5b 479 parents William Thorne and Mary Thorne (Sanders). dob was 29 Apr 1852 and the birth was at Pilton, Braunton. This is not the correct Emma. But see comments at the end of the document.

The death of John Thorne aged 81, labourer, on 14 Jan 1882 at Bickington, with informant W Thorne (son) does seem to be a good fit and would match the census entries for 1881 and 1891. Ref Mar 1882 Barnstaple 5b 343.

Although the baptism of Emma, with parents John and Mary, was found in the Fremington parish registers for 1858 – on the same date as brother George, I have yet to find the correct birth registration. The only possible one is in 1855 with father William – so is it possible that she was actually their granddaughter?

Result – John and Mary are the family on the 1851 census as shown above. And so it appears that Mary Evans was born in Braunton. George (1852), Elizabeth Ann (1844) and Edmund (1850) are confirmed as siblings of Joseph Henry. If Emma is from the same family (seems likely from marriage certificate), we need the correct birth certificate to prove the connection. The main task is to find the origins of John and Mary, using the 1851 census data and confirmation of children as the starting point.

5 Joseph Henry Thorne’s family

Florence Mary died in 1891 according to a cousin and the death registration has been found. Walter George also died, in 1896.

Birth registrations have now been found for most of the children. Descendants have now been fully identified for the proven children. One additional child was identified, Lily May, who was born in 1883 and died in 1885 at the age of 1. The birth and death certificates show this to be incorrect.

It was also stated by one of my cousins that Joseph Henry Thorne lived in Pilton before the death of his wife, Eliza Blackmore. I am becoming wedded to the theory that Emma wasn’t actually Joseph’s daughter, but that of his son William – who we know married someone called Mary. One of the birth certificates obtained gives Emma’s birth as the child of William and Mary (nee Sanders).

Joseph Henry was later the head gardener at the Yarner estate – this is what my mother told me and also what Florrie Thorne told her son Roger.  Need to look at the electoral roll for about 1915-1920 to prove this conclusively.

It was suggested that Joseph Henry remarried a widow, Mrs Hockridge, after the death of Eliza Blackmore. I have now found the marriage of Joseph Henry Thorne to Lucy Hockridge on 26 Feb 1927. Her maiden name was Andrews. According to the Probate register she died in Barnstaple on 18th Oct 1937

The informant to the death of Joseph Henry was H Thorne, daughter in law of Bicton Place. This has now been confirmed as Hannah, wife of Ernest Thomas (Tom).

May I give thanks here to my cousins Ruth Phillips and Roger Thorne and also to a good friend Dawn Grisenti (descended from the Garnish family) for both confirming the information I had and for greatly extending the family tree of the Thorne and Blackmore families?

Summary

This search has taken some two years to complete and has been as frustrating as the results have been rewarding. I now know the names of all 8 of William Blackmore’s children and, mostly, what happened to them. They were quite a wealthy family in the end as William left just under £2000 in his will in 1920. I still need to find the marriage of Florence Mary to Boxall/Boxhall and whether each of his children had more children of their own. It is not totally certain yet when William Blackmore went overseas – he hasn’t been found in 1871, but his youngest child was born Aug 1872. We know he returned to the UK around 1886 as a fluent Spanish speaker and so had probably been in South America for some years. Also, he didn’t approve of Eliza’s marriage to Joseph Henry Thorne – he left a proportion of his estate to Eliza in such a way that it would then pass to her children and not get to Joseph Henry.

Joseph Henry was originally a stone mason, but gave that up to follow his passion of gardening. He became the head gardener at Yarner (between Bovey Tracey and Haytor on Dartmoor). After retiring he bred game birds (probably bantams). He also lost his money drinking, but remarried after Eliza died. There are family stories about a rift caused by this second marriage. All of his children have now been accounted for and the descendants of those who survived have been traced.

The last few weeks (July 2004) have been amazing for finally getting to the bottom of the searches for Joseph Henry and Thorne and William Blackmore. Very recently (September 2004) I have found William Blackmore on the 1841 census with his parents, William and Ann. Consistent with all previous information his father is described as a Schoolteacher. They were living at Gammaton Moor, Wear Gifford in Devon.

Now to find out

-          The origins of John Thorne, father of Joseph Henry

-          The origins of James Blackmore, grandfather of William

-          Whether there are living descendants of William Blackmore, other than through Eliza, and whether his family bible survived (it was left to Lucy Grace Garnish)

-          Where William Blackmore’s father was a teacher in Burrington and Wear Gifford.

Since writing the body of this document one living descendant of William Blackmore has been found, the grandson of George Frederick Blackmore. He is in his late 80s and the last person on that line. I am also following up on another son William Henry Blackmore. The death certificate for his wife in 1931 states that he was a Railway Official Federated Malay States (retired). His own death, in 1939, was reported by R A Skyrme, son in law. So the search continues to trace that family. Sadly a third son Thomas Albert hanged himself in 1929.
